About Kevin Fee, Chief Engineer, Innovation and Business Performance Acceleration Framework
You cannot accelerate with the brakes on, the engine underpowered, and the powertrain disengaged.
After 40 years leading innovation teams across six industries, I discovered why most business development projects fail. It’s not from lack of effort or motivation. It’s from three Speed Killers that systematically destroy momentum before losses can be prevented and gains can compound. The solution isn’t pushing harder on the accelerator. You have to prevent loss to enable gain.
I’m Kevin Fee, Chief Engineer, Innovation and Business Performance Acceleration Framework at Axiom™ LLC. Unlike traditional consultants who advise from the sidelines, I engage directly with you, working alongside you, not prescribing from outside. I lead organizations past the Speed Killers that destroy momentum, delivering hands-on, practitioner-led work toward sustained competitive advantage.

The Pattern I Couldn’t Ignore
I didn’t start my career as an innovation and business performance expert. I was an NPD Mechanical Engineer solving technical problems, designing high-security banking and cash management equipment, pharmaceutical processing systems, automated mail sorters, automotive components, and smart locker technology.
Different industries. Different markets. Different technologies. But everywhere I went, I saw the same repeating pattern.
Talented teams would launch ambitious initiatives with maximum effort. And then get frustrated as momentum disappeared. This wasn’t because they lacked creativity or technical capability. Something more fundamental was destroying their momentum.
Based upon four decades of first-hand experience, I identified three forces that systematically destroy business momentum:
- Uncertainty and Risk (The Brakes) — uncertainty is not knowing which direction to go, risk is the fear of heading the wrong one. The organization hesitates while competitors advance.
- Capability Gap (The Horsepower Gap) — teams busy but not progressing toward meaningful goals, the gap between organizational capability and change complexity.
- Execution Restraint (The Disengaged Powertrain) — implementation so slow and disruptive it kills market adoption and ROI.
I call these forces the Speed Killers. They appear in every industry, every company size, every market condition. They’re the brakes destroying momentum, even as companies push harder on the accelerator.
That realization changed everything. I shifted from solving technical problems to becoming an innovation and business performance acceleration expert focused on leading organizations past these systemic obstacles that determine success or failure. Revealed, Not Invented
Axiom™ LLC is not the product of a methodology designed in advance and then validated. It is the product of forty years of lived experience that refused to be explained by the conventional answers.
I spent four decades inside the problem, as an engineer, an R&D leader, a head of product development, across six industries and seventeen patents. Not observing from outside. Inside. During those forty years I encountered eighteen frameworks that practitioners and researchers had developed to solve specific problems in specific domains. Prospect Theory when I needed to understand why organizations resist change. Job-To-Be-Done when I needed to specify what a solution actually needed to accomplish. Taguchi’s Quality Loss Function when I needed to quantify what a capability gap was costing. Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovation when I needed to understand why a superior solution was failing to reach adoption. Each framework gave me a better tool for a specific problem. None of them told me how they connected to each other.
Four of Those Encounters, Among Many
MIT Sloan School of Management (mitsloan.mit.edu) Advanced Certificate for Executives in Management, Innovation, and Technology
Not to learn new frameworks. To find language for what I had already been observing. MIT connected me with executives facing the same Speed Killers I’d seen, confirming these patterns were universal, not industry-specific.
University of Illinois-Chicago Toyota Product Development and Production Systems
Toyota’s systematic approach to product development and manufacturing performance revolutionized industry. I studied how a disciplined problem-solving methodology could transform business innovation, moving from creative chaos to repeatable excellence.
IDEO – Human-Centered Design Understanding adoption and implementation
Innovation isn’t measured by what you invent. It’s measured by what gets adopted. IDEO’s “design thinking” approach showed me why solutions succeed or fail in real-world implementation.
Kansas State University Organizational Leadership
Organizations are human systems. Understanding how people and teams navigate and respond to change became essential to understanding how to prevent the Speed Killers that destroy momentum.
The connection between these frameworks, and the fourteen others, came from a different source. From living inside the same failure patterns long enough, across enough industries and organizations, to recognize that the patterns were not random. From the deep reflection that only accumulated experience makes possible. And from that reflection, the axioms emerged.
The axioms are not frameworks. They are the foundational truths that reveal why each framework addresses what it addresses, and how they fit together into a sequence. The BPAF is the architecture the axioms made possible. The eighteen frameworks are not its ingredients. They are its evidence, the independently validated confirmation that the pattern I found in practice was always there, waiting to be named. The dots were always there. The axioms are what connected them. The BPAF is what became possible once they were connected. That is why the axioms feel self-evident once encountered. Not because they are clever. Because they were always true.
What Makes My Business Performance Expertise Different
Most consultants focus only on execution speed, rapid prototyping, agile methods, faster iteration. Execution matters, but this approach focuses on the third Speed Killer while ignoring the first two.
Here’s the problem with jumping to execution:
If you’re uncertain about what needs to change (Uncertainty and Risk), solving the wrong problems or the right problems with wrong solutions (Capability Gap), faster execution just means failing faster, and burning through time and resources while doing it.
How I Navigate First
I start where others skip: Navigate, the most neglected practice in business innovation. Like an engineer reading the performance dashboard before opening the throttle, this systematic diagnostic approach reveals:
- What’s actually changing in your business landscape
- Which circumstances are genuinely ready for change (vs. which aren’t)
- Whether your organization has the capability to cause the change
- Which problems are worth solving (vs. which are distractions)
Companies skip this step because it takes expertise and time, requires admitting uncertainty, and doesn’t feel productive compared to “taking action.” So they jump to solutions.
And most of those solutions fail, not from bad execution, but because they never made sense of the problem they decided to solve in the first place.
I prevent Uncertainty and Risk before inventing solutions. I prevent Capability Gap before implementing changes. I prevent Execution Restraint before losses accumulate into something irreversible.
You have to prevent loss to enable gain.
This systematic practice, multi-disciplined problem-solving, backed by research and refined through professional experience, is what I use to lead organizations to performance acceleration. See how it works in practice →
Four Decades of Pressure-Tested Experience
The methodology I use wasn’t developed in isolation. It was forged navigating real innovation projects under competitive pressure, tight timelines, and high business stakes, learning which obstacles accumulate into catastrophic losses and how to guide organizations safely past them.
Industries Where I’ve Led Transformation
Financial Services
High-security banking and cash management equipment development, navigating regulatory disruption and competitive pressure
Pharmaceutical Systems
Powder processing system development during rapid technology shifts and market evolution
Logistics & Automation
Automated mail and package handling during major market disruption
Automotive
Component innovation in shifting supply chains and evolving technology standards
Smart Technology
Automated locker systems development against aggressive competition in emerging markets
Manufacturing
Assembled and non-assembled product manufacturing innovation and optimization
Each challenge taught me which uncertainties and risks accumulate into catastrophic losses, and how systematic management prevents failures when the business stakes are highest.
The results are measurable:
PDMA research spanning two decades shows the pattern consistently. Their 2003 Best Practices Study found best-practice firms achieving 76% success rates compared to 54% for firms without structured processes, a 40% improvement. This was confirmed in PDMA’s 2021 Global Best Practices Study of 651 companies across 37 countries, which found best firms achieve approximately 50% higher success rates through systematic practices. The difference isn’t methodology quality. It’s preventing momentum losses before they accumulate into failure.
This expertise doesn’t emerge from copying frameworks or reading case studies. It develops through decades of navigating real situations where the cost of delays due to uncertainty, unmitigated risk, and slow implementation is measured in lost competitive position, not just poor business performance.

Why I Became an Innovation and Business Performance Expert
After leading innovation teams across six industries and earning 17 patents, I could have stayed in corporate roles. But I kept seeing the same preventable failures frustrating talented teams and destroying brilliant ideas.
The frustration was from watching companies focus obsessively on acceleration, more innovation, faster execution, aggressive growth, while unrecognized Speed Killers systematically destroyed the momentum needed.
You cannot accelerate with the brakes on, the engine underpowered, and the powertrain disengaged.
If three Speed Killers are destroying your momentum, pushing harder on acceleration only compensates for their effects. Neutralize the Speed Killers first, and a 25% increase in effort actually delivers more than a 25% gain in momentum. This isn’t about working harder. It’s about being effective. But most companies waste enormous energy fighting their own brakes.
That’s the work I do as an innovation and business performance acceleration expert. I lead organizations in neutralizing the Speed Killers that destroy their momentum, prevent those losses systematically, and then accelerate to the performance that sustained competitive advantage requires.
